Lucy Wins 3 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
At the Virginia Theater Association conference this fall, senior Olivia L attended stage combat, filmmaking, networking, and other fun actor workshops. Les helped Olivia rehearse a 60-second monologue that landed her 14 callbacks from prospective colleges, allowing her the opportunity to chat directly with professors from each college about their theater programs. She individually workshopped with professors from Christopher Newport Univerisy and Virgina Tech on her monologue, and also worked on making connections with scene partners with professors from James Madison University. She also earned two scholarship offers from Randolph College and Rowan University!“a really useful experience for me to learn more about certain colleges and their theater programs. I connected with a lot of the professors that I met and even went on tours and attended theater major days for colleges that I was interested in at [the conference].”
CHS junior Zoë L. spent her fall semester at Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki, and this photo shows her enjoying a canoe trip on the Moose River!
Here is her personal reflection on the experience:
During the fall semester I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Maine Coast Semester Program at Chewonki. I, along with 42 juniors from across the country spent the semester learning all about the ecology of midcoast Maine. We also spent time working on the farm, camping, and exploring the woods around the school. Every week we got to practice our fieldwork skills in a different place along the coast, such as a salt marsh, and a bog. Some of my favorite parts were the field lab to Pemaquid point, the solo camping, and working on the farm after school. Even though a lot of the semester was different from past years due to covid-19, I was grateful to be able to have in person classes, and visit new places.
Sophomores, if you’re interested in learning more about Chewonki for your junior year get in touch with Meg!
Daniel reflects on his experience here:
“During the semester-long class I learned a lot about space exploration, NASA‘s previous and upcoming projects, engineering design processes, and wrote a ton of APA essays. During the summer academy, I spent four intense days planning a long-term habitation mission to Mars with the ‘Science and Surface Operations’ team. During those days there were presentations from subject-matter experts and even an astronaut.”
The Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) program is an interactive on-line science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning experience, highlighted by a seven-day residential summer academy at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.
Students selected to participate in the program are immersed in NASA-related research through interaction with scientists, engineers and technologists. The program is a partnership between the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, NASA Langley Research Center, The Commonwealth of Virginia and Industry.
The work of the creative QuarantZine team has received outside recognition! The first two issues of their publication were reviewed in the new issue of Asymmetrical Anti-Media, a quarterly zine that reviews dozens of other zines. Olchar has even been contacted with requests for copies. Well done!
Rising Senior Lucy B. gave herself an ink challenge during quarantine and it was featured by #ArtinRoanoke. Her work here is based on a series of words in Scots-Gaelic (which she’s been studying for the past year or so).
The ComMUN team competed against 900 other students at the conference, with some teams from as far away as Italy. Despite the jam-packed morning-and-night schedules, they received multiple awards for their performance even though it was their first time attending this conference.
CHS students Yutika P won a Verbal Commendation (4th place) in National Honduras Police, Morgan B. won Outstanding Delegate (second place) in SOCHUM for her representation of Ecuador,
Sam P. and Tallulah C. won Best Delegate (first place) for their representation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in CARICOM!
Nature club has set up a compost bin in the school yard outside! All you have to do is put your food scraps into the stainless-steel collection bin located in the student lounge according to the instructions found here. The proper food scraps can also be placed directly into the bin if you are already outside.
