Manipulation in Three Dimensions
The students in 3D Modeling and Sculpture learned about basic geometry creation and manipulation in 3D space. Using a 3D art program blender they each created a photo composition in 3D, including custom objects that they created themselves. Members of our Zine Club traveled to Richmond with Olchar to attend ZineFest, where our students could sell or trade the zines they’ve created here at school.
Trees in the yard
The Environmental Science class took advantage of the beautiful weather last week to work on identifying native trees in the CHS yard and sketch in their field journals.

Geometry Art
Artistry becomes a lot more difficult without the use of curves! Geometry students were asked to practice using points, lines, and angles to come up with original drawings.
Carvin Creek Critters
The Environmental Science class visited Carvin Creek to place experimental leaf pack bags in the stream. They will use the data from the collection to assess stream quality and learn about habitat characteristics for these captured little critters.
Mangos and Avocados in Spanish Class
In conjunction with “Bananas”, a book about the conflicts and environmental issues of Banana Plantations in Costa Rica in the 1970s and 1980s, Spanish III/IV students took some time to learn about mangos and aguacates. They are germinating and planting the seeds and will journal in Spanish about their progress and process.
Field Journaling
The Environmental Science class took their first field trip of the semester to Mill Mountain to practice using their field journals as they identified the species they found.
Xan Earns Global Stock Pitch Award
Last semester Xan W and friend Alex S won second place in the Global Stock Pitch Competition hosted by the Young Investors Society. This competition featured over 2,000 high school entries from 71 countries. The Fashion as Resistance class explored historical uses of fashion as a tool of resistance and their final project was to curate an end of semester fashion show.
Video Game Exhibition
Our first Game Night was a huge success! The Video Game Design students set up an exhibition of their creations and made them available for all to play. Garden Variety Harvest Visit
Roanoke Field Studies students took a trip to the new location of Garden Variety Harvests at Lick Run Farm. The group met with founding farmer, Cam Terry, and learned about what it takes to start and run an urban farming business on land held in agricultural conservation by the Southwest Virginia Agrarian Commons.

“Homer-o-stasis” lab
There is nothing quite like a “Homer-o-stasis” lab. For this homeostasis lab our Biology students had to keep their Homer Simpson alive for five minutes. This involved keep his temperature, water level, and yellowness steady, even though water was pouring out of the bottom of Homer’s cup.

Solar Panel Study
Students in the Roanoke Field Studies class visited Roanoke Catholic School to visit their solar panel arrays. After returning to school, they went up to the roof to see if the CHS roof would be suitable for solar panels.
Speed of Light
Physics students were treated to a sweet experiment. They carefully began to melt chocolate bars in microwaves to calculate the speed of light using the distance between the melted spots and the frequency of the microwave.

Students in Film History: Sci-Fi Cinema replicated the Kuleshov Effect, an editing experiment developed by Soviet filmmaker Lev Kuleshov in the early 20th century. Roller Coaster Mathematics
While the French students were visiting, the Algebra 2 and Calculus classes collaborated to build a roller coaster. They used butcher paper to measure the x and y axes. The whiteboard shows the piecewise function they wrote along with the graph approximating the form of the coaster.

Giulia Spends the Whole Year With Us

As part of learning about primate anatomy in the Human Origins class, students attempted walking on their knuckles like gorillas, hanging from one arm like gibbons, walking on their palms like baboons, squatting like monkeys, and walking bipedally like chimps.

Bethany’s Calculus students challenged each other with “Math-Libs”. Students took turns choosing a classmate, math problem, and activity (like jumping, snapping, humming, etc). Then the chosen student had to complete the problem while doing the activity. Lifelines were allowed.
