Dichotomous Key
Biology students conducted a scientific exercise using a dichotomous key to identify Jelly Belly flavors, similar to how biologists historically identified species before DNA technology. They applied key scientific skills such as observation, hypothesis formation, and testing. This tasty experiment highlighted both the strengths and limitations of traditional classification methods, providing insights into scientific practices.
Taxonomy
Zoology students applied the principles of taxonomy to classify stuffed animal toys by characteristics such as size, shape, color, pattern, fur, feathers, scales, wings, and tails.

Spring 2025 Community Service Day
For our final Community Service Day of the year, we partnered with Roanoke City Parks and Recreation and the YMCA Express at Gainsboro. The Parks and Recreation group removed invasive species and painted fences along the Greenway, while the YMCA group helped out with a variety of projects at the facility.
Calculus Retreat 2025
Our Calculus students had the opportunity to participate in a three day retreat at Smith Mountain Lake. They studied hard preparing for their AP exams, but they also took time to enjoy each other’s company, and have some fun. Also… they welcomed back a very special guest – Bethany!

“Little Women” Trip to the Theater
The Transcendentalists & Suffragettes class visited the American Shakespeare Center for their lovely production of “Little Women”. After reading this classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, the students enjoyed the fresh adaptation played out before their very eyes. The cold rain, however, did cause them to have to relocate their picnic plans.

Ambrielle is now the Assistant Director of Admissions at the University of Lynchburg and was participating in a panel at the conference.

Lily Earns a Scholastic National Silver Medal

Reebop Chromosomes
To demonstrate biological concepts and processes, our students created baby Reebops out of marshmallows and gumdrops. They used parent Reebop chromosomes to determine their features, and it’s a great illustration of how genetics is responsible for both similarities and differences within a species. The Vienna Class Visits the Taubman Art Museum

Ice Cream Chemistry
After learning about heat transfer, phase changes and phase diagrams, the Chemistry class put it all together to make ice cream using sublimation as a heat absorber. The students cooled down their liquid mixture of milk, sugar, and vanilla with crushed dry ice to create a fun, and slightly carbonated, ice cream treat.
