The Theater Department of Community High School presented “100 Dresses,” Mary Hall Surface’s stage adaptation of Eleanor Estes’ acclaimed Young Adult Novel.
Set in the backdrop of the American Depression, students of Miss Mason’s Fifth grade class navigate through the throes of poverty, change and learn notions of acceptance of those whose culture and way of speaking appears strange and different. As Maddie Reeves observes the rough treatment recent immigrant, Wanda Petronski, receives, she begins to drift away from those who tease this daughter from Poland. Matters are made worse when Wanda claims to have 100 dresses, though she seemingly appears daily in a strikingly familiar outfit. Maddie takes it upon herself to change how her classmates treat Wanda of 100 Dresses, though it may be just a little too late.
Two CHS theater alumni students helped to make this production a success with providing lighting assistance and filling in as a last minute understudy.
