Cimafunk!

Cimafunk, a prominent Cuban jazz funk musician and Afro-Cuban Rockstar, graced our school with a live performance before an engagement at the Jefferson Center. It was truly a special treat for all of us to witness his incredible talent and unique blend of musical styles.

His latest album, “El Alimento,” has garnered widespread acclaim and was even nominated for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album at the 2023 GRAMMY Awards. Cinafunk’s presence at our school was truly a memorable experience that left a lasting impact on all who were fortunate enough to witness the extraordinary talent firsthand. After leaving Roanoke, the band performed at the White House!

We’d like to extend a huge thanks to Cimafunk, the whole band, and also to Vladimir Espinosa, who set up and provided the percussion instruments for the performance.

Rocket Launch

Students constructed soda-straw rockets following instructions written solely in Spanish from the NASA Jet Propulsion laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. The best rockets were launched over 30 feet. The top 4 creators (in order) were Ronan, Wilbur, Sam, and Desmond.

Mario / Game Night 2023

Derek M once again organized a game night and for the second time Medhi E won the Wii Mario Cart tournament. Other board game and video game players also joined in the night’s fun.

Kickball

After a productive day of Community Service, students took advantage of the wonderful weather and enjoyed a kickball game at River’s Edge Park.

Greenway Cleanup

For our fall Community Service Day students and faculty took to cleaning up the Greenway! They rolled up their sleeves and picked up trash between the Vic Thomas and River’s Edge Parks to help make our Roanoke green space neater and nicer for the next person to enjoy.

The group also had a chance for a Q&A session with Roanoke City Parks and Recreation about volunteering. Afterwards, they hung around the River’s Edge Park for a friendly game of kickball.

ZineFest 2023

Members of our Zine Club traveled to Richmond with Olchar to attend ZineFest, where our students could sell or trade the zines they’ve created here at school.

Kayaking on Carvins Cove

After spending a semester conducting research at Carvins Cove, the Roanoke Field Studies class ended the year with a fun kayaking trip.

The Fashion as Resistance class explored historical uses of fashion as a tool of resistance and their final project was to curate an end of semester fashion show.

Video Game Exhibition

Our first Game Night was a huge success!

The Video Game Design students set up an exhibition of their creations and made them available for all to play. A board game designed by a senior student was also available.

Additionally, traditional games such as Mariokart, Halo, Smash Bros, Just Dance, and various board games were also enjoyed. Everyone had a wonderful time!
