Pride and Prejudice

After attending two balls in their reading of Pride and Prejudice, students in the Jane Austen class were tasked with choosing the wardrobe for two of the characters. They found the origins and names of various parts of the clothing they chose, and noted any significance in coloring. Next, they selected the music to be played for three dances at one of the balls. For each piece they named their composers and described the choreography.
The holiday season inspired the Brothers Grimm class to be a little extra creative. What happens when you combine classic fairytales and greeting cards? Why, you get “Merry Grimmas” cards, of course!
Students in the Weimar Culture class considered the intellectual legacy of the Weimar period through philosophers of the time. Students read “On the Concept of History” by Walter Benjamin and excerpts from Minima Moralia by Theodor Adorno. The class explored questions about historicism, technological development, and the position of the modern subject in light of WWII and the atrocities of the Nazi regime.
The Fashion as Resistance class explored historical uses of fashion as a tool of resistance and their final project was to curate an end of semester fashion show.
Annabelle, Izi, and Evalyn treated the Vincent Van Gogh class to a special homemake cake on the last day of the class.
The Norse Mythology class shared their end of the semester creative projects with us. Their talents shined through with public speaking, various types of artwork, writing, baking, acting, and film production. It was a well attended event.
Yutika P. has this to say about her internship during her senior year:
The past two semesters I worked as an archaeology lab assistant for Dr. Warden at Roanoke college. My project was about analyzing pottery that was excavated in Elephantine Island in Egypt. I spent a lot of time in Excel and learned many wonderful skills. The first poster was from my own research and the second one with me is from my joint project with Hannah Jones where we specifically examined Egyptian cooking ware! The picture with me in it is me presenting the research at Roanoke college’s alumni weekend.
The Food and Society class took a trip to Local Roots to explore a real-life local food system after months of researching foodways and social justice issues within the food world.
