Extracting DNA
The Biology students had the pleasure of carrying out a favorite laboratory experiment – extracting DNA from strawberries.

Today we celebrated Western Wednesday, a fun observance that has survived through the years thanks to students carrying on this amusing tradition.
Alum Audrey Rowe (’19) shares her Fall 2022 experience with us from VT:
This fall I had the pleasure of being on Virginia Tech Homecoming Court. Homecoming at Virginia Tech involves court candidates to choose platforms to spread awareness about. My platform was “Advocating for Alliance with Audrey” and aimed to bring awareness to gender-based violence and survivorship. I chose this platform because gender-based violence is a prevalent issue on Virginia Tech’s campus. I wanted to foster a safe and welcoming community for students. Throughout homecoming week I was able to have my own booth on campus and share information and resources with students at Virginia Tech. This was an amazing experience and it was great to spread awareness about this issue.
Our Fall Community Service Day covered a lot of ground. Our students took walking tours exploring the area’s non-profit agencies close to campus, many of which we have served as volunteers in the past.
Students and faculty also rolled up their sleeves and side by side cleaned, planted, and freshened up our campus inside and out.
The winner of our Sense of Belonging banner contest was also announced – more details to follow about our submitted designs soon.
After filling in all of those circles, our freshmen, sophomores, and juniors had a chance to blow off some steam snacking, volleying, chalking, and just chilling out together in the yard.
Our French students met online with the English class of Louise Lestavel at Lycée Professionnel Saint Joseph, in Bucquoy, France. They took time to practice in each group’s target language asking questions and getting to know each other. Louise and Sebastian are planning meet-ups with varied formats for the two groups throughout the school year.
The Physics class had the giant sling shot out again!
They first calculated the base velocity of the sling shot, and then used that data to determine which angle they needed to launch the ball to hit their target at varying distances. It was a perfect day for an outdoor experiment.
Astrobiology students studied the characteristics of life by trying to grow microbes from about a dozen different environments including pond water, yogurt, bread mold, and yeast. Dr. Ken Sosnowski, a retired microbiologist, came in to help the class identify what they grew.
The Roanoke Field Studies class visited Roanoke College’s new Environment Center on their most recent field trip. They are working with Dr. Rachel Collins in the Biology department to learn how to identify tree species using dichotomous keys. Students will return to the site in two weeks to collect data on 100 trees in a small wooded plot, then they will analyze their data back in the lab at CHS.
Ebelin R reflects on her summer experience:
The Latinx Leadership Academy (LLA) provided me with the experience of meeting so many wonderful people from around the state of Virginia who, like me, are also first generation college bound students of immigrant parents. I also got to meet many different people of latinx ethnicity, and we were able to share our culture with each other.
In the process, I was able to discover more about myself and my identity as a latina in a priveldged white area. I also got to be part of a team called “Casa Eslayyyy!” and together we won a first place prize for our presentation where we discussed some of the issues of being a first generation college bound oldest child in the family.
This community also gave all of us an opportunity to share our personal experiences and pull out some of the stereotypes that are taught/heard in hispanic/latinx culture. We discussed how we are all in this together and that it’s okay to feel the way we do. I felt that it validated all of us, and even if the path forward is not always clear, we believe that we will reach our goals in the end!!
