Traditional photographic techniques inspire creativity at CHS. CHS’s Digital Photography class hasn’t limited itself to creating images using cameras alone. In a scintillating display of technical and conceptual unity, these students have boldly captured images of high contrast and printed them using a few chemicals and the power of the sun: Cyanotypes.
Our Psychology students showcased their understanding of the roles and functions of complex brain structures by creating “brain food” menus that cleverly describe their unique functions in the brain. Would you like a little boost in your memory? Maybe you’d like to order up Keegan’s “Hippocampus Hawaiian Pizza”. It has a nutritious storage of juicy information and flavors. The is pizza is so memorable you’ll never forget it!
By practicing math in Spanish while playing board games, students were able to practice their target language skills in context, improving their vocabulary and comprehension. The social nature of board games also encouraged collaboration and communication, further enhancing their language learning experience.
Jupiter C and Ivor G are currently taking an exciting course at the Grandin Film Lab. The process of scriptwriting is a crucial part of filmmaking, as it sets the foundation for the entire production. They’ve been learning about storytelling, editing, directing, and sound operation, all of which are essential elements of a successful film.
Once they are finished writing their scripts, they will submit them for a possible opportunity to have them turned into short films and shown at film festivals across the country.
CHS Spanish and French students participated in the Global Y-C.R.E.D. 2023 language conference. This conference provided students with valuable information on how to leverage their bilingualism in future career opportunities. With the global economy becoming increasingly interconnected, employers are seeking individuals with language skills to help them navigate the complexities of international business. The Y-C.R.E.D. conference provided students with the tools and resources they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
This conference also provided an excellent opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the languages they are studying and to gain valuable insights into the cultures associated with those languages. Through interactions with native speakers, students were able to improve their pronunciation and grammar, while also gaining a deeper understanding of the nuances of the language.
Global Y-C.R.E.D. 2023 is hosted by the Global Seal of Biliteracy and aims to provide students with connections to native speakers, strategies to enhance their language skills, and insights into leveraging their bilingualism for future opportunities.
One of the highlights of the opening of SWOON at the Taubman Museum of Art was the series of interpretive dances presented by Southwest Virginia Ballet. Our very own Evalyn W delivered a graceful performance of art through movement.

Jen Sosnowski and Meg Snow may spend their days teaching about living organisms and the earth’s natural systems, but they also shared their musical talents and brought joy to their audience singing in The Voices of Appalachia‘s concert “Hush My Baby, Don’t you Cry”.

Lindsann is a pudgy chapbook bulged with nearly 50 pages of poetry spawned from the squinty sea of nonsense verse à-la Lear, Carroll, Rabelais, Blaster Ackerman, Dr. Seuss, Stanchel, & co., with a delectable avant-garde & ‘pataphysical twist.
The Environmental Science students created storyboards and comics to represent changes related to the effects of human impact and invasive species on various ecosystems.
