CHS Winter 2019 Theater Production: “Walk Two Moons”

Community High School of Arts & Academics 302 Campbell Ave SE Roanoke, Virginia 24013

The Drama Department of Community High School proudly presents Tom Avertis’ stage adaptation of Newberry Award-winning novel, Walk Two Moons, November 15 and 16. The curtain rises each evening at 7:30 pm at the June M. McBroom Theatre. The price of admission is $5

Set in modern day, 13-year-old Salamanca (Sal) Hill sets out to visit her mother who has left for Idaho. Traveling with her grandparents, Sal entertains by sharing stories about her experiences in her new community in Euclid, Ohio. She tells of her friend Phoebe and the neighbor who may have buried bodies in her backyard. Sal regales on Phoebe’s family crises and of the Lunatic who has come to haunt them. But all along Sal wishes to see her mother and return to her beloved Kentucky farm.

Of Sharon Creech’s novel Walk Two Moons—first published by Harper Collins in 1994— Kirkus Review comments the author “fashions characters with humor and sensitivity,” finding Sal’s story simply “poignant.” The novel received the Newberry Medal in 1995 as well as United Kingdom Reading Association Award.

Walk Two Moons is appropriate for ages 10 and up.
